Biography

Dr. Yu joined SSW in 1989 after almost 20 years of social work practice in various educational, health and mental health settings and independent practice in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Born in Shanghai, China, and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan, Dr. Yu came to the United States to pursue graduate degrees in 1960. She earned her Master of Religious Education degree from New Orleans Theological Baptist Seminary in 1962, Master of Social Work degree from University of Oklahoma in 1971 and PhD in Public Health from University of Oklahoma, Health Science Center in 1981.

Highlights of her practice career include working with parents of deaf-blind severely disabled children, advocating and promoting special education in the public school systems prior to PL 94-142's enactment, establishing group homes and community services for mentally ill youth and adolescents state-wide and working with Southeast Asian refugees and school personnel.

Dr. Yu's teaching and research interests continue to focus on past interest and commitment which include health and mental health, child and family, and refugee populations. Two new areas, ethnic and women issues and alternative medicine have been added to her area of study and research since coming to teach at SSW.

In addition to responsibilities at SSW, Dr. Yu has been a training faculty for Texas Protective Services Training Institute since 1996. She conducts workshops state-wide on Asian American families and children and effective assessment and intervention strategies.
