Dick Schoech is the Dulak Professor at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA), School of Social Work. He teaches courses in administration, community practice, and human services technology. He has previously worked as the Executive Director of a Comprehensive Health Planning Council in Columbus IN, as a regional human services planner, and in several other human service agencies. His work for the UT System began in 1966 as a janitor. He also worked as a research assistant and received a BA in Psychology from UT-Austin, and an MSSW and an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Administration from the UTA Schools of Business, Social Work, and Urban Studies. He was selected as a charter member of the UTA Academy of Distinguished Scholars in 2004. Dr. Schoech is also an Honorary Professor, Dept. of Social Work & Social Admin, U of Hong Kong where he has taught several human service technology courses to students in Shanghai via distance learning.
Dick grew up on a dairy farm close to Muenster, a small German farming community in North Texas. He attended high school at Subiaco Abbey, a monastery community in the foothills of the Ozarks in Arkansas. He married Sharon, a social worker, in 1969.
He is founder (1981) and coordinator of the Computer Use in Social Services Network (CUSSNet), and founding editor (1985) of The Journal of Technology in Human Services, published by Haworth Press. He has written three books and numerous articles on human service technology and has been the principal investigator on grants to develop applications in child protective services, aging, HIV/AIDS, substance abuse and developmental disabilities. He is currently the chair of HUSITA, an international organization on human services technology. He has presented on IT and Human Services in 13 countries including China, Peru, Turkey, the UK, and several countries of Eastern and Western Europe.
His research interests include e-learning, performance support systems, knowledge engineering, and high-technology culture. Past research/development activities involve developing multimedia and World Wide Web computer based training and decision making applications. With the help of several talented graduate research assistants, Dick has developed software packages including Keisha, Kids HIV and AIDS Training, and the Worker Safety advisor. His recent grants include using OLAP technology to help child welfare managers use their data to improve decision making and working with youth to develop SubstanceAbusePrevention.org a virtual drug abuse prevention community on the Internet. His current projects involve using automated web and phone technologies for case management in order to improve client adherence to treatment.
Hobbies include travel, plants, carpentry, and ethnic objects. The typos in my work are caused by critters.
